Remember the brave allied troops who endured a lot when they started operation Overlord which kicked off the liberation of europe under the oppression of the nazi's.
Respect!

I will drink to that. I did a motorcycle trip of the d-day beaches in 2009 and doing another one this year. Very moving stuff those cemeteries and battlefields.

I used to do work for a guy (been gone for close to 10 years) who landed on D Day. He showed me a real Nazi arm band and flag he acquired during his duty. I asked how and he replied the solider he took it from didn't say anything. It was amazing to see the real deal as I had only seen those items in old footage of WWll.
He was a great guy and proud of what he did in Europe.

My Dad landed on the 2nd or 3rd day after D Day iirc what I've been told. He was 18 at the time and stayed in Europe 4 yrs. He was in Germany when they surrendered. He bought back an officer's dress sword and dagger and a huge swastika flag that his unit took when they liberated a town in France. All his men signed the flag in the white part. It was kept in the tube a 105mm mortar round came in. I have seen it many many times as a kid over the years. It was quite an event to get it out and unfold it and look at it. He also brought back an new officer's pistol - it was new in the holster and the guy carrying it hadn't even removed the grease.

All his souvenirs stayed an my grand parents house where he was raised and after his father died, they mysteriously disappeared except the pistol. I have that in my gun safe. Pistol was always kept locked up and is prob the only reason we still have it.

My Dad never talked about his experiences except his last few years and then it seemed he wanted to pass along some of what he went through. He sure saw a lot of action, 19yr old battlefield Lieutenant. He was very lucky and he came home whole, finished high school, went to college and then to work, married and raised a family.

A salute to all who have served and currently serve to make what we enjoy today possible!!
