5-8K Surging - constant and accel throttle

Hey all,

Newb just signing in.

Just bought a 2002 FZ1 Black with 27K which seemed to be neglected (chain gunked up, oil hadn't been changed, tires shot, valves need checked, but still runs like a raped ape under full throttle).

It came with a Leo Vance slip and sounds great. Definitely feels stronger than the R6 I came off from.

So far have just changed to rotella syn 5w40w. Next would be the valve clearance check or dealing with the carbs

My main concern is that from 5-8K the bike surges under throttle. I was going to do the Ravenrider 127.5 jetting and shims to see if it would help, but not sure what the real problem in. Any ideas?

sweet thanks guys will definitely be checking the air filter, pulling the carbs, checking valves, and dielectric in the electrical connectors.

tried the lazy mechanical carb clean....seafoam. No change so far.

sidenote... I found some 530 sprockets in my area - sizes 47, 48, and 49.
If anyone might want them I'd pick them up from the guy. They were from an R1 2003.
