Had my 1000km service done and a 16T front sprocket fitted. Very happy with the sprocket change the response has improved dramatically!!

Only one problem....The bike has developed a ticking sound coming from that area which is very noticable between 2000 - 4000 RMP Its not a vibration and the drive is very smooth.... I took it back to mechanic and he took it for a ride and advised that it may be the fact that the 1000km old chain and new sprocket have to 'wear in' together. Does this sound right? Has anyone else experienced this with their front sprocket change?

btw the sprocket was a genuine Yamaha one. Your comments/feedback would be appreciated.

Cheers,
PK

I'd say it's entirely possible that he is right. Usually when you replace sprockets, you want to change the chain as well but I see with only 1,600 miles there should be no need for that. If you had 15 to 20,000 miles I'd say to replace the chain. I wouldn't worry about it. As long as your chain is lubed and adjusted properly you shouldn't have a problem.

Does the new Yamaha 16T have the added width stuff on it like the 17t does ?

When I did mine I went after market sprocket, Yamaha told me they didn't make a 16T for it ? All after market as I know don't have the wider stuff on them for noise and vibration. Now I get that, keep it lubed :rmwl:

You probably had a genuine Yamaha GYTR sprocket installed that does not have the rubber damper. They will make more noise. The better choice is to order a stock 16t with the rubber damper from an earlier model um, um um .......shoot I can't remember if its the R1 or earlier FZ1.

EDIT:

I think this is what you need. First gen FZ1 16t from parts shark 33 SKU: 4XV-17460-00-00 SPROCKET, DRIVE (16T) 1 $19.56
.

Hi All,

Thanks for the comments. The 16T was a brand new genuine Yamaha Gen 1 unit with the rubber bushes and the chain was tensioned correctly after installation. I rode it again today and noise is still there. The drive is very smooth and there are no vibrations so im not too concerned now.

I didnt think a 1000km old chain would have too much wear, guess it will just take some time for the 'old' chain and new sprocket to 'bed in'

Credit and Thanks to Ballmead who recommeded this modification . Now that I have done it I can also speak for how greatly it improved the ride experience. The bike is more responsive through the rev range and jumps off the line much quicker.

I will keep you all posted on any improvement of the noise situation.

Cheers,
Paul

UPDATE

Well im happy to report that after only 250km riding with the new 16T sprocket the chain/sprocket ticking noise has reduced by at least half of what it was. It's wearing in nicely and dos'nt have that dreadful (Ducati like)clickity clutch sound anymore. Happy Days! :)
