Alright guys. Basically short story. I put the cig lighter on the bike. Every time I hook something into it, it fry's the thing. So, I checked my wiring. There are only 2 prongs on the socket. Pos and Neg. I have the Neg grounded, and then Pos is connected to where my relay lets power go to the grip heaters...

Should I just connect the cig lighter direct to the positive of the battery? Would I need a fuse for that assuming I am only charging my cell with it?

I have blown out 3 cell chargers now as soon as I turn the key or plug them in, so I am getting a bit pissy. I assumed it was cheap chargers, but now after going and getting a 20 dollar one from radio shack, I am pissed.

Thanks!

I have my power plug hooked up with the negative going to ground and the positive going straight to the battery with an "inline" 5A fuse. So far I haven't had anything blow out on it.

Ok so I just went and got myself an inline fuse holder, and some 5A fuses. Also went to radio shack and replaced the cigarette lighter cell charger that died on me earlier.

Going to wire that up tomorrow and go direct to the battery. She will always be hot, but that is ok as when nothing is plugged in its just an open circuit.

I think you'll be fine like that. I didn't put mine on a "switched" source only because in case I only needed to use the phone, GPS, or mini compressor, I didn't want to have to have the bike running or the key in the "on" position.

Yup, something about the way its rigged with the relay is messing up. So I will start from scratch tomorrow. Won't take long to do it, around 10 mins and I will have it rigged up.

I have the Cell mounted on my Handlebars... I use it as an MP3 player which bluetooths to the intercom on my helmet. Also, it is a GPS but the GPS when turned on destroys my battery very quickly. SO if I want to make a trip I will need it charging the time I am using it.

;)

LOL. Yeah, I know I know!

I am improving though. Did around 180 the other day, did a good 120 yesterday. In the last 10 days I have put 1K on the bike.

When I go to deals gap though in September, that should be around 2500-3000 in 6 days. Should be fun ;)

Heading to PA end of this month, that will be 650 in two days. That ride will be my trial run so I will know what absolutely needs to be changed to make the 965 mile ride each way to the Dragon. Then I figure a good 600-1K driving around NC, and whatnot all around there.

Pretty stoked!

yeah, i was just bustin your balls. i would like one for a gps, but i would rather rough it like an idiot and put a map in the clear pocket of my tank bag. hope everything works out for you and your charging unit thingy. i am going up to maine this coming weekend, but when i get back and before you head out of the region, we should go for a little ride, maybe around mid july or so.

Papa... have you been to the Dragon yet? If not, hit it during the middle of the week and go easy the first trip through and back, then start to work the corners once you've determined where the LEOs are waiting (or, hopefully not) but do it fresh in the morning... don't go there without being sharp and rested. Also, stay hydrated! It can be too much fun and you will forget to hydrate. A camel-back helps a TON! There are better roads there than the Dragon though... 28 in any direction was quite a workout!

Just for the thought of it, You stated your power comes from the relay the controlls your grip heaters. Is it possible your on the output side of the relay and the self regulated thermal load is waht is feeding your lighter socket and not the 12v input side of the relay. In fact I would definatly put your in line fuse in and go straight off the battery with a good ring terminal. And put the ground from the lighter socket to a good bolt in the frame. Please only my 2 cents. Good luck all the same.

Earl, That is how I am going to do it. There is a possibility I made a mistake and I am on the wrong end of the relay. All I know is, the grip heaters work normal and are working with the ignition perfectly. So I am just going direct to battery with a 5A fuse in line off the positive for the cig lighter.

:)

FZ1inNH, thanks for the tips. Been doing a lot of reading about all that. Should be great fun. I want to hit the Blue Ridge Parkway when I am out there as well. Me and some friends are going. Going to be a blast!

PJ, shoot me a PM. We could hook up if ya want. I am always around weekends for sure.

I have have a battery tender quick disconnect cable that is hooked to the battery. I bought a 3 outlet cigarette connection outlet that has the same connection as the battery quick disconnect . I purchased the cigarette 3 outlet device at radioshack. You can buy the battery disconnect at battery's plus.
