An addition to the house... (New pics added 8/23/2010)

it's great to see the progress. Also very interesting to see how different the building methods are in the USA compared to Europe. Such a wooden construction we use mainly for a garden shed (no disrespect Eric!) but the wooden framework structure building for domestic buildings is slowly increasing, mainly because it's less labour intense (again no disrespect to the hard work you've been doing so far Eric!)

I have more pics... :D I apologize for not being online more often as of late. With the projects here and at work, the after-hours clients demanding my time and our medical situation with my wife, I have not had the time to do more than work and sleep with all quality time going to my wife. I'll go unload the camera and post pics.... then tomorrow, since tonights will be dated, will show the rest of the progress, provided it isn't raining when I get home to snap pics.

More to come:

*EDIT* I apologize... I do not have more recent photos than the insulation day so I'll have to post them tomorrow... Sorry!

"THIS SPACE LEFT INTENTIONALLY BLANK" for the moment anyway..... lol!

No need to apologize Eric. We totally understand.

I'd thought I took pics more recently than the day I insulated but no.... Of course, the contractor is long since done, the exterior is all buttoned up and my progress has been getting the inside, as of 9:15pm tonight, totally sheetrocked. Now, that panel lift rental from Cheapo Depot was a savior! Doing a 14' catherdral ceiling by yourself? Well, you cannot do it without that lift! Pics tomorrow.... and I start mudding Friday (I really HATE that part!)

So, I spent last night mudding and how I hate to mud and tape! But, it is progressing! I did not get pics last night and tonight it rained right up until dark. That, and it was FAR too hot and humid to get up into that cathedral ceiling to mud.

It was this way LAST night and when I came down off the ladder for the night, I was soaked through all clothes in sweat. I had to quit and hydrate then shower and I was too tired to consider a camera. Tomorrow is supposed to be a great day here so I'll do my best to get some pics and post them up. This is really turning out to be a very nice little addition!

Sorry for no pics tonight again though....

OK! I have some pics!!

Here's some shots of the outside buttoned up and some of the inside as the rock, tape and mud is being applied. Now, the outside... we couldn't get the exact shingles but from the front, since the two roofs are separate, it is a lot less noticable. From the back, you can see where he had to blend it with the old shingles. I made sure he used the newer siding on the front and side and all the old faded and small pieces on the back. I still have to pressure wash it.

The inside, I just started taping and mudding. The problem is the humidity has been extremely high here in the last week and the first coat of mud took forever to dry! I ran out of sweat and steam trying to get the first coat done and have not tried since. You can see I have a long way to go to finish and get ready for the bigger knives. I'm FAR from a pro but I can promise it will be smooth when the paint is applied.

The addition looks beautiful Eric. Very nice job on your part as well. I know what you mean, mudding sucks big time! For me, the worst part is the sanding. Some guys are so proficient at taping they barely have to sand when finished. I'm not in that category. When I did the bathroom here I must have gone through a entire box of screens, and my bathroom is only 6'x8'!

Hopefully you'll get a break soon with this horrible humidity and get it done. Thanks for the update!

The outside looks great Eric! As for the roof shingles it's not that big a deal since it's only noticeable from the back of the house not the street.

Good luck with the interior. If there is one job I hate is taping, sanding, painting (you get the idea :D) so I don't envy you one bit.

:cuss: So, I screwed up. :nono: I've never done this amount of drywall before... never had to put it up when butt-ends meet. Now I've got a mess! I just read that when butt ends are to meet, I was supposed to take a rasp to the ends and bevel them much like the sides are done? Told you I am not a pro! :surrender:

Ok, so now what do I do for the butt ends and tape? I don't want to tape flush ends and have to build it up and feather it WAY out!!!

I'm using the mesh tape. My initial thought is this:
  1. Score the drywall 2" in from each butt end
  2. Peel the paper off the but ends
  3. Apply mesh tape to bare areas as it is about as thick as the removed paper.
  4. Mud over these as if they were the beveled ends meeting

Unless someone can point me in another direction?

It's not a really big problem Eric. Go buy a gallon of MH Ready Patch and mud the joints with that first, then apply the mesh. Then just compound as usual. The ready patch will not shrink and will give you a good platform for the tape and compound.

I'm not going to bore you all with more pictures because it's nothing more than more mud and tape... but I have the entire room coated and a second coat in many areas. I ended up stripping the butt ends Billy then applied the mesh and mud. It came out very clean and will sand smooth! :D Thanks for the tip though.

I have to admit that I am getting a lot better at this. There won't be a lot of sanding to do. I've been very good with the 8" knife and done the whole room with just this one blade thus far. I will pull out the 12" blade for the skim coat though. I have to go out tomorrow and buy an extension pole with the sanding head on it and a pack of the fine sanding mesh. The next pics will be when it is primed for paint, then when the paint is applied (she's yet to pick colors) and then when the tiling is going down. Last will be the trim work.

I should have this wrapped up in a couple weeks. The extreme heat and humidity here has been my pitfall. Plus, I will not be around this weekend to work on this. I have two client visits this week in the evenings for computer work. Seems to be dragging along!

Don't feel bad Eric. I literally spent the last three days inside the house. I am not a hot weather person. Anything over 85 degrees is way too hot for me. This morning I left the house at 6am and rode my bicycle to work and back. I just wanted to see how long it would take to get there. Once the heat wave leaves, I want to start riding the bicycle to work. It took me exactly 1 hour round trip and that was with nobody on the roads so I figure during a work day, maybe 45 minutes tops. I went through two bottles of water along the way and a tiny bit of tightening in the chest. I came home and immediately downed another aspirin, took a shower, and hydrated once more. I'm sure that this friggin weather is to blame. I have done the same amount of miles (14) from my house to the end of City Island and back with no issues at all. I guess I'll be riding the FZ to work until this heat breaks. I hope you had a great weekend and that things are going well at home!

Jeeez Billy! You have to be careful out there, especially in the heat. I'm glad to hear that you will wait for the heat wave to pass. You Sir need to take it a bit slow and ease into this.

It was a pretty good weekend. Michele and I spent the day out on the bikes Saturday. We got her bike inspected, had a brunch south of here and then drove down into MA and tooled around, ending up in Amesbury for the rest of the day. It was an uneventful ride thankfully! Yesterday was all cookout after we washed and waxed the truck, car and her bike.

Today, I mudded until I ran out and am well into the second coat as mentioned. Then I BBQ'd again tonight. The boys got the patio area dug out and prepped for the rocks.

I hope your weekend went without a hitch! You be careful!!!

Thanks Buddy, I'm feeling fine, no worries! I made sure to leave at 6am so it was still relatively cool out.

I must have missed the pictures when I was out playing in the woods. It looks great! Like it was always there. As far as drywalling, I don't envy you that, especially if it's hot when you are working. I'm sure that it will all be worth it when you are done though. You just might just inspire me to do the inside of my garage (on rainy days, when I don't feel like riding). Although I would rather have a root canal than mud and sand drywall. I did learn something about butt joints from this thread.

I'm picking up another bucket of mud. 5 gallons didn't last for two full coats. But, I'm getting pretty handy with the blades... I'm DONE with that useless corner tool. Not worth the money spent. The 8" blade does a GREAT job on the corners once you get the proper technique. That is.... one side of a corner at a time... let THAT dry and do the other sides of the corners the next day. Final coat? Dab the corners and run it with your finger, just like applying a thin silicone bead to seal something. Works GREAT!

I have one of those corner tools sitting in a box that I wasted my money on to. The 8" or 10" straight blade was what I used and it does a much better job.

does that make me a bad@$$ if I do the same thing with a 6" blade??

better you than me, that is all I can say when it comes to taping....I'll hang it all day long and leave good joints, but you won't see me standing around when the knives are broken out.....:shoot:
