02 fz1 no spark

I need Help. I appear to have this exact problem. 2004 Gen1 FZ-1 with 15k miles. Bike shut down suddenly on a ride Sunday. It would crank but no start. Had to call for a ride home. Monday morning I was able to get it to run a few times. Originally thouing it was the fuel pump and went thru the fuel delivery, cleaned the carb.

This is my second Gen 1. I have a parts bike that the engine locked up at 112k miles. So, at this point I have swapped everything except the stator coil and the crank position sensor. Both test good. I can get 6.5v AC out of both legs of the Stator coil when cranking the starter. And I get DC volts from the crank sensor when trying to start.

Had the plug out testing for spark and actually got spark once and it started on 3 cylinders. That was 3 days ago. Now consistent no spark. I have gone thru all the connectors and the harness and can find no issues.

Anyone actually solve this before? Getting close to putting it back together broken to clear my work area. Out of ideas.. thanks.

Did you swap over the ignition from the old bike. Had this problem for one ride and after squirting WD-40 into the ignition though the key hole opening it’s worked fine since.

Please report back what the final answer was for you.

THANKS MAN... I think that's it.. I can rattle the ignition switch and it will start but not stay running.

A correlating fact - I was on an usually choppy road where I noticed it was so bad I could not see in clearly the vibrating mirrors.. AND the ignition switch on this bike rattles in the mount where my old blue bike the ignition is rock solid.. So that road at that speed with a loose switch = NDF..

Now to getting the switch off the old bike. Looks like it takes surgery..

I just move the whole top triple tree over to avoid dealing with the tamper proof bolts on the ignition. It works....

Thanks again.

P.S. I bet this was the problem that was never fixed with the original post on the 2002.

Hope it keeps working. Mine has with just the WD-40 squirt long ago. I’ve seen similar threads on this site and the old FZ1oa.

I used to be on the old FZ1oa site too. Never seen this issue myself. I had tired to sell my "parts bike" twice. Glad I still had it. and now it's really a parts bike after all I pull of it testing for this failure. Glad it was not a mystery that makes the bike not trustable for road trips.

I love the Gen 1.
