pulled rear wheel to have a new pirelli angel Gt tire installed by cylcle gear. After getting new tire /rim back from cycle gear, I decided to install oem rear pads from a local dealer since i had to pull the caliper anyway. After installing the new pads i noticed the pads were dragging against the rotor. The oem yamaha rear pads were defiantly thicker than the EBC organic pads i removed. So, I thought i'd give the bike a good ride and the drag should go away. didn't happen, still dragging!.. is the caliper piston sticking or did cycle gear switch the spacers to the wrong side of the wheel?.. Does anyone know if the thicker spacer should go on the left or right side of the rim?. both are flanged on the 07 gen 2 BTW.

Thanks for any advice!

Wish i knew as im due after this season for brakes almost definitely and want to make sure if theres a way to mess it up lol..sorry dont have anything relevant to add, just want notification to the thread.good luck

I’ll check spacers on my bike in the AM. I think the thicker one goes on the left side.

Can you elaborate on the dragging? The pads are supposed to rest on the disc to a degree. Certainly not provide more than a smidge of pressure. Are your brake lines stock? Or aftermarket SS braided?

Definitely a possibility the piston is stuck. Also a possibility of a smashed or fouled up brake line causing check valve effect and causing the drag. If I were you after verifying spacers I would remove the wheel and exercise the caliper a bit and change the brake fluid. Given the age of bike if everything is original maybe consider a caliper rebuild (there are good vids on YT) and putting a new line on the back.

With Gen 1s and every other bike and brand I’ve owned the spacers are different diameter from side to side. Gen 2 shows different part # for spacers probably due to dia not width.

Try bleeding a little fluid off. I put in new oem pads without doing anything else and the rear brake was super sensitive, would lock up with little effort. Bled enough fluid that there was a small amount of play before engagement. Been fine since……. 80K mile 01 Gen 1.

If that doesn’t work then you probably need to do as Joe suggests ……..clean pistons/rebuild calipers.

As far as I can tell with the wheel on it looks as if the wider spacer is on the right/caliper side. I don’t think you can easily get them mixed up when i stalling the tire. Question…did your old pads wear evenly? You should probably first check the caliper slide pins for freedom of movement. If those aren’t properly working your pads will wear uneven and cause one if not both pads to drag. Lots of videos on YT on how to remove/clean/grease.
