I live in Oregon & don't need the CA emissions for CA, so what is all that stuff I can take off & not effect the performance? Have an aftermarket canister but other than that it's stock jets & intake.

Alos, should I cut the air cleaner hole that everyone recommends or is that just for aftermarket exhaust & jets?

I don’t know what is specific to CA models related to emissions but I’m sure someone will let you know. There is the AIS system on all models that’s worth removing, not for improved performance but for improved access to the spark plugs. Taking it off does involve capping the 4 metal tubes that it’s attached to on the front of the motor.

All models had 120 hp at rear wheel in 2001-2005 so anything you remove is for aesthetics or access.

I had cut the hole in my original stock Gen 1 and left the lid on my stock spare Gen 1 alone. There was no difference that I could feel changing between the two. Personally I wouldn’t bother doing it without doing other carb mods.

If you did the Ivan’s or Holeshot jetting it’s probably part of their instructions …...and worth it to get a smidge more hp. The best numbers I use to see were a 10hp gain with jet kits. Keep in mind that some jet kits will lower your mpg. My stock Gen 1s get 50 mpg and that’s important to me. If I just wanted more ease in lofting the front wheel a sprocket/gearing change would be my approach.

As far as I know the only difference on the CA models is the inclusion of a charcoal canister in front of the swingarm. Instead of the fuel tank vent and overflow hoses routing to the ground, they go into this charcoal canister. This is supposed to absorb fuel vapors or any overfilled fuel and keep it out of the atmosphere. Since it's just the vents it has absolutely ZERO impact on performance so there's no point removing it, maybe just to save a half pound of weight, that's all.

My blue 05 bike has it intact. My silver 01 bike was purchased in Indiana then later registered in CA so it doesn't have the canister. There's no difference in performance between the two bikes.

CA models also have different carburetor part numbers but I don't know the differences; maybe it's just different (leaner?) jetting for CA? Irrelevant if you install a jet kit.

The airbox mod is only beneficial if you rejet the carb, which you should do since you mentioned you have an aftermarket exhaust. The Ivans or Dale's (holeshot) kits are very convenient, but the RavenRider carb mods are significantly cheaper. Only downside is sourcing all the parts separately. It's much easier just to pay upfront and have a full jet kit.

I see a port on the side of the head pipe below the right side front footpeg that has a delete cover on it, or maybe that’s stock. Check the pic & let me know if this is supposed to be there or if this was a mod the previous owner deleted something there.

I have a CA gen 2 bike. The charcoal canister is below the tank(from what I can remember). Never even thought about the additional system, really. But lately I thought out of boredom I should remove it. Never did. Just not worth the effort. System never caused issue and bike has a tune and is fast as hell to begin with.
