Got my 'new' blue Gen I running

I don't know why but when I spotted a blue 2004 FZ1 with 3000 miles for a great price, I had to buy it. It's been sitting for a long time and wasn't running well, though it did start and idle with the choke on. Previous owner started digging into it to get it running, replacing spark plugs, oil change and filter, and a new amazon/ebay fuel pump (???) but I guess he gave up when he realized the carbs had to be removed and cleaned. The engine starts up on the choke but as soon as you give it throttle or turn the choke off, it dies out.

I got the tank and carbs off and cleaned up that mess. The fuel was horrible, probably still from 2004 or 2005, and was the worst smell I have ever experienced. The tank was surprisingly in good shape aside from a few minor rust spots inside, so I soaked with the Blaster Metal Rescue and put a 3' piece of chain inside to shake around and loosen up.

I got the carbs out and cleaned, using the All Balls rebuild kit. I didn't use any of the included jets, just the o-rings, float bowl gaskets, needle valves, needle holders, and a few miscellaneous screws from the kit. I used the RavenRider jetting, sourcing euro needles from RavenRider himself, and got 127.5 main jets from Sudco. I *did* port the boots; this is one thing I didn't do on my Silver bike. And of course the airbox modification. I cleaned the jets with a piece of wire and thought all was good, and bolted everything back together. I was all excited to fire it up, but it ran exactly like it did before, only idling on choke and engine stalling whenever I tried to give any throttle. I couldn't figure out what was going on, I thought maybe spark plugs but I pulled the plugs and they're brand new NGK CR9E.

So I did some thinking, this behaviour sounds exactly like clogged pilot jets but I thought I cleaned those. Looking at the carb schematic and studying it, I realized I missed the PILOT JETS! I can get the carbs off these bikes in under 30 minutes, but this time was even faster. So off again, and sure enough three of the four pilot jets were completely blocked. I cleaned them up, and then when reassembling the bowl gaskets were stretched and swollen from being exposed to fuel so I had to wait a few hours but finally got them back on and she starts right up and idles perfectly!

I don't know what to do about this fuel pump, it look cheap and sounds weird. I suspect the previous owner incorrectly assumed the idle problems were caused by a faulty fuel pump. (My Silver Gen I has around 60K miles on the orignal 23 year old fuel pump!!!)

Now for a coolant flush, oil change, brake fluid flush, fender removal, new tires, and cleanup of a few crusty fasteners. Is there anything else that needs my attention on a bike that's been stored for almost 20 years?

We need pics👍

Because I'm "that way", I touch every connector to clean and slab some goop in them. Found a couple crusty connectors on my previous bike during that process that I was able to sort and repair before getting stranded somewhere on the highway.
Also, I'd check / lube the suspension linkage bearings as well as give the wheel bearings a good look see. I've seen the needle bearings in the rear wheel fall out on some older units with non use.

I'm not new to the FZ club. I've owned a silver one since 2012, has at least 50K miles on it now but there was a two year gap between the last reported mileage and when I bought it (gauges/fairing missing). Aside from a dent in the tank it looks good for its age, and never fails to start. I've let this bike sit for months even without a battery tender and it instantly fires up every time. I'll be looking to sell this once I get the blue one sorted. I also used to own a 2001 YZ426 which also had the five valve engine. Looking back, it was very similar to these FZ/R1 engines of the era.

Side covers are missing, luckily they're still available and relatively inexpensive.

One headlight has a minor scuff. Can these headlights be polished out or are they coated with a UV protectant that would be compromised by polish?

There's not a whole lot of aftermarket support for these anymore, but I'm surprised to see Ivan's and Dale's stuff still readily available. I sourced my own AIS block off parts for $12.

I'm still looking for turn signals, not sure if I should go with flush mounts for the fronts or extended stalks. For flush mounts it looks like TST makes a set that fit, but they look identical to the ones on Amazon for half the price. Any recommendations there?

I am focusing on all the mechanical things first, coolant, brakes, and bearings. As I mentioned in my earlier post there are a few fasteners with some surface rust, specifically the rotor bolts. I'll remove and clean, then reinstall with blue thread locker or anti-sieze depending on the application (no anti-sieze on any torque critical bolts!)

I was looking at several different bikes but settled on this 'new' old FZ1... Came close to buying a friend's MT-07, what a ridiculously fun bike to ride especially in the city, and even did really well on the freeway.. but nothing like these Gen I FZ1s. The CP2 sounds amazing with an Akrapovic slip on, but I didn't like how early I had to shift, and the suspension was undersprung for my average frame.

Well if we are doing all that, here is the stable a few years back....
I didnt want to highjack the thread but I guess brilliant minds think alike. This is one of my other bikes. 95 VFR.

Love the photos of all the bikes. Mine isn't nearly as clean, there's some minor surface corrosion on some of the pieces such as the top of the upper triple clamp, handlebars, levers, and the rider and passenger footpeg brackets. Eventually I'll get those all cleaned and polished, even thinking about having those silver footpeg brackets powder coated black at some point.

I absolutely love the VFRs. Way back when I bought my silver FZ1 I was considering several bikes such as SV650/1000 and V-strom, but the RC51 and VFR were top of my list. FZ1 deal popped up first so that's what I got and never looked back. I prefer the sound of a V-twin (and V4) but after test riding so many different bikes over the years I still love the ergonomics and power delivery of these Gen I FZ1s.
