We went for a group ride yesterday. Went with some new people, him and his wives...
Anyway they are Harley riders on sportbikes, (nice people though) but they all rode like old ladies.
I'm pretty sure that was a contributing factor as when we ride we like to ride. I think he was getting impatient
behind them. Passed 3 other riders and didn't slow down enough for the corner. If he had just a bit more asphalt he would've been fine

It's a bummer too because the bike was rashed when he bought it and we put that body kit on like 2 weeks ago.

Here's his damage. Both him and the bike are salvageable. He was in ER for a few hours but is home now. I think his pride was hurt worst of all. He's very lucky because we all know it could've been much worse. Also jeans don't do Jack on asphalt. He had all the other gear on.

That stinks. Glad he is okay with minor injuries. It's tough when you don't have the newer/slower riders toward the back of the pack. He's probably going to feel it more today. I hope he heals up soon!

Good gear helps

But it isn't a guarantee as this shows. A local rider that I met only once went for a group ride and fell on a easy section of trail. He went down hard and although he had no abrasive injuries, he; dislocated his shoulder, broke his scapula, fractured 6 vertebrae, broke 4 ribs, and lacerated his liver, and collapsed (partially) one lung. It hurts when you have a 600 lb. bike fall on top of you.

Sorry about your buddy, and I hope he heals up well. The bike can be fixed. His pride will heal as well, and he will have a scar to remind him to ride his own ride next time out.

Strange how some folks seem to think ATGATT doesn't include good riding pants. Good to see he wasn't hurt worse.

I did a local street ride on my KLR yesterday in jeans, not sure why but stupid me!

I commute in jeans, but of course have all the other gear; helmet, gloves, boots, jacket, back protector. In the spring and fall I wear the pants to. When I leave town I always wear the whole kit. Ironically the commute is probably the most dangerous.

Sorry to hear about this. Glad he'll be OK!

He needs to understand that a group ride is a test of patience. When we have riders who pull out and pass multiple bikes without regard of safety, we pull over and give them one shot to shape up or leave the ride to be on their own.

As for ATGATT, I ride dressed for the crash. I'd much rather sweat than bleed. My recent off was a simple commute home, met face to grill with that car coming the wrong way on a one-way street. I had no visible injuries thanks to the gear and years of offs on dirt bikes and knowing *how* to crash. We are very vulnerable out there on these machines. Please, always take every precaution you can to minimize personal injury. Like me, it can happen within 3 miles of home. MOTGATT doesn't work well.

I pray he is able to get back on two as soon as possible. Bikes can be fixed of replaced but we're all one-off models!

I really should consolidate all my recent crash-related info into a single thread. In the mean-time, I'll echo the pants comment. I'm convinced that wearing riding pants saved my leg from pretty nasty injuries. As it was, I was able to walk away from a total-loss crash. These pants were less than $150 and I'd had them for less than a week. If that had been jeans and skin, I'd have been in the hospital for sure.

I dunno if hes gonna get back on or not.
We went and rescued his bike after breakfast, drug it to my place and shoved it in the garage.
Told him to heal up for a few and we'll figure out what to do with the bike then, just to make sure
he had nothing to worry about other than getting better.
He sent me a text this morning saying he may just give me the title, he doesn't wanna ride anymore
While a free bike would be awesome I told him to put his big girl panties on and get back on.

Thanks for sharing; glad he's not too badly hurt. Funny how our instincts take over and do us more harm than good.

Tell him his bike can lean more than 25 degrees and he'll be fine next time ;) A crash like that is an indicator of someone who was riding way over their head. We all do it; I certainly have. Another rider on the same bike in the same circumstances may have made the corner fine and then some. If he really doesn't want to ride, that's probably a sign he shouldn't and I would encourage him to give it up

It is a bit soon after the crash to be making permanent decisions. I agree that he should take time to heal up before making a decision on his riding future. He is still hurting and probably freaked out realizing that one bad decision could have killed or maimed him. Some people are more affected by that realization than others.

Although I have never crashed on the street despite a few close calls, I have in the dirt, and more than a few have been scary ones. Good gear and dumb luck have kept me from any real injuries thus far, and have greatly improved my risk vs reward analysis. Maturity and age may have played a part in that development as well. Yeah right.

I agree with Lee... too soon. But he does need to re-evaluate and slow down, maybe go take the BRC course then immediately take the intermediate and advanced courses. It teaches a rider how to handle these situations better. I'll bet if he'd counter-steered a little more while scrubbing a little speed, he could have hit the apex and lightly throttled out of it. Maybe get him back in the saddle but urge him to keep the throttle-hand in check. :D

I don't think it was a matter of not knowing what he was doing, I think he panicked. He seems to know how to ride just fine, he has had no issues keeping up with us but he said he had to stay up above 7k to do so.

Edit: Looks like I'm gonna own a thundercat...
I'm gonna hold onto it for a bit before I do anything in case he changes his mind but he's mentioned it to me a few times now.

Update:

Went to visit my buddy yesterday, he was finally functional enough for visitors.
I got the low down on what actually happened. Apparently one of the new riders decided to try to keep up with him as he passed in the oncoming lane. Just as they were coming up to the corner a car came around from the other direction. He tried to cut back but didn't make it.
I personally tend to believe his account because the other kid has only been riding for a few months, and my buddy is a pretty decent rider. Even before he told me what happened I assumed it wasn't completely his fault, I figured there was another mistake made somewhere but didn't know what.

I hope he doesn't give up riding, but it's his decision. I pray he heals well.

I'm not big on large group rides, but HD and metric cruisers are all that are around me (and maybe a rare squid on a GSXR). I went on one "poker run" with a guy I work with. I'd ride with him again, but never that group. All HD's and they almost came to a stop to go around corners and cross RR tracks. I NEVER drink and ride (I love beer, but NEVER with a motorcycle, not even a drop). This seemed to be the main purpose of the ride.

I finally have real riding pants! This story reinforces why I have them. I'm headed to the Dragon the first week of September which is why I pulled the trigger on them, but I've meant to get them for a long time. They have a zip out rain liner and CE knee pads, but only a very light foam for the hips. I may need to upgrade that. I also have some Kevlar lined cargo pants coming too. No armor with them, but I believe they have pockets where they can be added. I bought some CE knee pads to put in them. I just hope they will stay in place.

Let us know what happens with your friend and the bike. Everyone gear up and be safe!

I agree drinking and riding is stupid. I did go to the bar about 3 miles from me and had 1 beer and went straight home last year...
As of right now he's still convinced he's done riding. When I went to visit yesterday he signed the title over to me. I kept trying to convince him to keep it and ride more but he has kids etc.

Side note: No one else thought it was strange that this other guy we rode with brought his wives?

I noticed that in the original post, and simply thought that it was a typo. So you're saying there was a rider there with multiple wives? Were they all on one motorcycle?
