Sena SMH10B Firmware Version 5.0 Update With Universal Intercom Support!

Nolan issued a firmware upgrade last fall to update their B4 to Universal Intercom and a few other nice additions like a voice menu.

I have the upgrade but haven't tried the Universal Intercom yet due to winter storage.

I have a Sena SMH10R. I took it for it's first ride about a week ago. The Vox "failure to connect" message is said every five seconds when I hit speeds 60+ mph. It is very annoying. I cannot tell if the wind is hitting the center button just right or if it is the wind noise. If I scream into the mic while not moving it doesn't detect anything. I don't have anything paired to it but my phone. I am a little disappointed at the "out of the box" set up.

Are you committed to VOX? I just use the jog-dial to start and end intercom sessions. It's always worked well, and we've even left the "channel" open for long stretches without any conversation going on. I haven't even tried the VOX. The jog dial is so easy to hit that I have a friend who just tips his head to the side and hits the button with his shoulder whenever he wants to start/end an intercom session.

No I am not, however like I said it is out of the box settings... I read through the manual and didn't see anything like JOG - that doesn't sound familiar anyway. When I get some time I will play with it more.

Thanks for the suggestion. I wouldn't mind leaving the channel open but using it like PTT would be cool too.

Whoops. I didn't realize you had the "R" version... which doesn't have the jog dial (big rotatable button).

I tried out the 5.0 firmware tonight by having my son put my phone's bluetooth headset on, then put his helmet on over it. I'd already successfully paired them using the Universal Intercom pairing feature. He was able to get about 50 yards before the signal started breaking up. He said he could hear me clearly, but I could hear a lot of crackling interference on my end at the extreme distance. It will work when he rides with me, but I'm anxious to try it out with another "real" helmet intercom system.

I don't use the Vox feature on mine either ( I have the SMH10 with jog dial). The VOX would activate all the time from clearing my throat or because of wind noise. Other than that I really like the system. Everyone I ride with has a Sena, so while the update is awesome, I probably won't be using that feature anytime soon.

We're still playing with the music share feature from the last update. So far we've gotten it to work once, but haven't been able to duplicate that. To be fair though, we have only tried fiddling with it while actually riding. We need to mess with it in the garage one of these days ...

I think that the Universal Intercom feature has some good possibilities:
Pairing with riders who have helmet intercoms other than the Sena line.
Pairing with the driver of a chase car who has a bluetooth headset.

One limitation that I would like to see lifted is the documented limit of four headsets communicating simultaneously. I have a trip planned later this Summer that will include more than four riders who have the headsets. We would like to be able to communicate across the whole group, but haven't had a chance to try this out:

Pair B to A
Pair C to B
Pair D to B
Pair E to D
Pair A to E

Code:
[FONT="Courier New"]
     A
  / \
 B E
  \ /
   C - D
[/FONT]

I don't know if this "ring network" of headsets would work or not. Obviously all of them would have to be "connected" simultaneously. Has anyone ever attempted such an arrangement?

Oh! Now that's something I hadn't thought of! I would actually like to see if that would work! Not that I ever have a chase car, but I like the sound of the idea!
