Daily driver?

Hi guys, ive been a lurker on the site for a bit and i believe this is my first post. I recently sold my truck (diesel is expenisve!) and im down to just my FZ1 for a daily driver. Ive had the bike for a year now and Ive loved every second of it. Ive been using the bike as a daily for about a month now and have been debating on buying an S10 for my daily and that urged me to ask the question..
How many of you guys daily your FZ1s? Mine is an 03 Killer bee btw Lol.
 
I daily drive my Fz1. I'm also in AZ and considering if I'm going to keep doing it or not through the summer. I put in about 300-500 miles a week. I really like it most of the time for the maneuverability, speed and fuel efficiency (my car only gets 20 mpg at best and the bike is 30). You're Gen I will probably get even better mpg than my Gen II.

The only drawbacks are that there is not a helmet lock and I don't have a top/side case. I can get away with using a tank bag most of the time and will use a back pack if needed. If the bike is set up with a top case and even maybe some side cases I think it would be perfect for 98% of all my situations.

I have an O4 Skunk and it's been my everyday driver for about 2 1/2 years. It's not that bad. You get used to climate changes and dealing with bad weather or you get another truck. :) This is the 3rd time I have turned to a bike for everyday use. You will have to make small adjustments like instead of drinking coffee on the way to work - you will need to get travel mug and take it with you. Just little things like that. However - the more mileage you long - the more you will save on gas for sure. If you live in a state that lane splitting is legal - you will save a TON of time as well.
If you do decide to roll with the FZ1 - I would like to suggest buying a good, quality backpack or luggage. You will need something to carry your supplies for work or going to the grocery store.
One side note - HAVING to ride everyday has effected my DESIRE to ride for fun. I used to go trolling the Farm to Market roads all over Texas trying to find the twisty-est roads around. I would also question my drivers at work as to what roads had the most twists and turns. Now that I HAVE TO ride every day - I don't do that as much. I still love to ride - I just don't ride as much for fun as I used to.

I will second getting a good set of luggage and the decrease in the want to ride for fun.

i have commuted on my SV for about 4 years and starting to on the FZ now too. i get on the weekends twice a month now.

as for luggage, i have soft bags for trips and a lockable top case for work and occasional grocery/supply trips. i will not ride with a back again, its just too uncomfortable.
 
I do my best to be a fair weather rider. I've been caught in a few rain storms, but I don't seek them out. I don't ride below 40 deg (ice and bikes don't mix). I usually keep it above 50 degrees.

I fully intend to ride to work every day this summer that doesn't have rain in the forecast for my riding times. Riding the FZ1 to and from work makes those days go better. It can be a conversation starter with patients, if they ask if the motorcycle in the parking lot is mine. I even had one patient come in on a red FZ6. I think it was a first gen (didn't the FZ6 only have 2 gens?) I have kids and other responsibilities that make using a motorcycle as my ONLY form of transportation impossible, but I ride as much as I can.

Now that is a fact. When you drive all the time people will ask all sorts of question as well as tell you their motorcycle history. A few "Murdercycle" remarks (I had a family member die) but not too many.
I did have an old lady come up to me in the supermarket and shake my hand vigorously. She began thanking me profusely and ask me where I work. When I told her the name of my pharmacy - she twisted her face into a puzzled look - then she pointed at my helmet. We were both confused at that point so I showed her my helmet (A solid black Scorpion EXO 1000) and then she went back to thanking me for all I had done. As she was walking away she told me her son was a firefighter also and she loved firefighters. HAHAHAHA!!!! It took me a minute to figure out that she thought my armor and helmet were fire fighter's gear. HAHAHA!!!! That was awesome! She was a very sweet, polite, and VERY OLD woman.. I had to be polite to her and just said "It's my pleasure Ma'am" :rofl:
 
I just picked up a killer bee as well in Nov and modded the crap out of it already. I drive it 60+ miles a day to and from work alot better gas milage then my ford raptor :)
 
I don't ride in rain and it doesn't snow in South Florida. IF I were younger I would consider using a bike as a daily driver. I already thought about suggesting it to my kids when they get old enough.
 
I have a 2002 That I purchased nearly 2 years ago that I ride Daily to work and Back, about 34 miles one way if I only visit one client.

The only time I do not ride is when it is below 50 degrees in the morning (wind chill is a it much and that only happens a few times a year in San Diego), or when it is Raining, like today.

I really dislike driving a cage to work when I have too, the traffic is just too bad. Knowing I can lane share on the bike takes a huge load of stress off me thinking about dealing with traffic.

I used to ride with a backpack, but due to some medical conditions that affect my back I now keep it all in my tank bag, usually just my laptop and my lunch. I wait until I get to work to grab a cup of coffee.
