Bad vibrations

Here is the deal, and it's driving me nuts! 2007 fz1 with 16k on her. Motor is having really bad vibrations from 5k rpm and up. Below 5k is butter smooth! Mods include bmc filter, air box mod, and gutted cat. I had a pc3 installed and it seems as if with certain maps the vibration goes away. What I'm wondering is do I have some kind of lean problem in the upper rpm range? Also bike has had a recent tune up. Filter, plugs, throttle body sync.

Yes, filter was oiled. And it's not a fairing vibration. It's not present during Lower revs, but as soon as I get over 5k on revs it vibrating more than usual. But when I hook up the pc3 certain maps get rid of the vibrations completely. Just wondering if its a running lean issue in the upper rpm range? Even with just the air box mod, filter, and gutted cat I didn't think I really needed the pc3

You should be using the PC with those mods IMO... Why not leave it hooked up since it makes a difference?

yo demarcus i just put a 16 tooth sprocket on my bike and im experencing the same problem since putting on sprocket i only have a slipon i dont know if you might have changed your sprocket also good luck with the fix

If your filter is over oiled you will run too rich. The engine starts sucking some serious air at 5K. Just look at the map that doesn't cause vibration and compare it to the one that does at 5K. That will tell you if it is rich or lean.

Just changing a sprocket will not change anything in the electronics to cause a vibration. If you got the vibration due to a sprocket change I would make sure its the correct size, make sure the chain is in line between the front and rear sprocket, the one I just put on my bike has an offset so it could be put on the shaft backward and be out of line. Can't think of any reason you would get a vibration from the engine because of a sprocket change other than coincidence of an unrelated problem.

Is there just a vibration, or a vibration and power loss? Just thinking if they had the tank up they could have kinked the fuel line letting the tank back down. Might cause a vibration and power loss because its not getting enough fuel to the injectors at higher revs.

I read that was pretty common with the FZ1... kinking the fuel hose. Made sure to watch out for that when working on my buddies bike.

Thanks Guys! This is why I like this forum! I made sure the fuel line was not kinked, and I even did the fuel line mod. Filter shouldn't be over oiled either. Its hard to explain. Bike runs good and pulls hard at lower rpm's, but just as I pick up over 5k on the tach it seems really raspy, and it gets REALLY BUZZY. I think I am just going to put the PC3 back on the bike and try different maps. I just really thought that I didn't need the Power Commander with just the airbox mod, bmc filter, and gutted cat, but oh well. Only reason I did remove the PC3 was due to the horrible gas mileage.

Buzzy? Bad mileage? Coming in at 5k dependably? Stock exhaust? Making me wonder if the exup valve is closing in the exhaust. Especially if you removed the muffler and cables taking the cat off. Could take the cables loose, wire it open and try it.

Default position for the exup is open.

Your description is not very clear.
Could you do a couple of things.

Put the bike on the center stand. Start it and run it up slowly through the RPM's - going through your magical vibration point. See if you still have vibration?
If you do not, the trouble is likely wheel or transmission related.

If you are willing, put the engine into gear (on the center stand)- one gear at at time - and run up through the RPM's again. Do you get the Vibrations now? What happens here? Let me know which gear does what. Notice exactly what RPM's get vibration - in which gear - or no gear.

If you get vibration in neutral - your first test - still on the center stand - and feeling the vibration by touching or holding part of the bike as you run up through RPM's - tell me if the vibration intensifies after it begins. Does it get "worse" as the vibration rises?

If you get no vibration with the bike on the stand and while in neutral - then - as I said before - it may be wheels or transmission related. It's not likely to be transmission unless you did something to the transmission recently. I'm betting that you did not.

If you don't get vibration even in gears - then the trouble is the front wheel - most likely an out of balance problem - bent wheel or bad tire or ....

IF you get vibration in gears - but no vibration in neutral - then the trouble is related to your back wheel or chain or sprocket.

Do these things and let me know. I can't give you all possibilities - but give be more and better clues.
I doubt this is a big deal.

If you don't understand something that I've said (or more likely, I've rushed this, and made an error!), a PM to me would be fine.
