Hi,

I have to trepack my steering head, it makes some noise when turning to the left. Well it moves smoothly so it should need a repack.
In the service manual there are several "special" tools listed and I wanted to ask if I really need them or if there is a work around for this?
Next question: Do I need to replace any seals?

This is only me, but if I was going to remove my triples for bearing inspection, I would just go ahead and replace the set with some Tapered Bearings and be done with it. It's a little more involved but worth it. The best part is that the complete set will only set you back $30 bucks.

Yes that would be the way to go, unfortunately the sound just started and I will go on a 3k miles trip and have no time to order bearings and install them before this trip, so my plan was to repack it and deal with it when it starts again or when the next service is due.
Or do you know any source which could deliver the bearings until tomorrow?

would at least call around and try to find the bearings locally. Would think a shop in the SF Bay area would have some, probably the same part on a number of bike. If not i would take them out, inspect them, clean everything and repack.

Noise from a smooth operating bearing? Hmmmm. Does it make the sound with the front wheel off the ground when you turn it?

yes it makes the sound when I take the wheel of the ground. However the noise is like an old door, and only when turned completely to the left (last 3 deg of movement). The movement is always smooth and effortless, unlike a damaged bearing where you feel resistance.

I think it might be just missing grease it is the right side which causes the noise and this is the part which is exposed when locking the wheel. Most likely greasing it will be enough, I would not have noticed it without moving the bike in a narrow spot. In case I see pitting or other wear signs on the bearing I will replace them.

So what about the tools, are they required or is there a work around with usual workshop tools?

Re:

My FZ once had the a clicking sound when I hit the front brakes. Upon removal of the upper tree/brace I found the top bearing broken and almost disintegrated on one side. Too many wheelies from the previous owner? Perhaps.
I replaced them with tapered bearings and now is all well. It would behouve you to check.

Re

I used all balls tapered bearings, the same as the link above. You need to replace them as a set. It's a fairly easy job. I have a transmission jack that i use to keep my bike in place when I drop the front end. I replaced the collars and tapped them out with a tool I made out of 2 foot piece of fence post. Any questions shoot me a PM.
