It is driving me crazy.....just started about a week ago and comes and goes, when I am coming to a stop there is a clanking / rattle noise that sounds like it is something on the gas tank.
Of course when I am stopped cannot find it, or when I take my helmet off it is not doing it.
Also noticed does it when tank is full mostly, I lifted the tank and only thing I found out of place we the gauge wire was out of holder everything else looks ok.
I also checked fan and tight and works fine.
?????? any suggestions

When was the last time you cleaned, repacked, and torqued down your head bearing?

Also, are your brake pads worn and in need of replacement?

And lastly, have you done your fork seals lately or replaced your fork oil?

Next time you hear the noise, immediately touch your front brake lever, ever so slightly. If the noise stops it means its just your brake pads clacking around in the caliper.

If the noise persists, I would remove the top triple and remove and repack your bearings with new grease and torque it down to spec.

If still your hearing it, it may be your fork spring hitting against the fork tube. Sometimes you can just loosen the fork tube and give it a half turn and have the noise stop.

These are the three most prevelant things in the GenI to make noises like that and the easiest to troubleshoot. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks....I know brake pads are about 50% worn as just checked them and being on the brake does not stop noise.
I will check head bearing but was ok a year ago.
Will keep you posted, but it sounds like marbels in the gas tank

When my chain is in need lube and/or out of adjustment I get rattling noises at very low speed and when taking off from a stop. Check your chain slack and lube the chain.

Well I've been looking for a rattle in my fairing that I could not find. Today I rode to the store without my helmet and heard the rattle coming from my tail section not the fairing. Check it out that might where your rattle is is too.

Check your cam chain tensioner, sometimes just a certain frequency vibration will make a bike sound like something is wrong. Make sure your not missing any of the rubber pieces that go between tank and frame.

I've got this same sort of sound on a Gen II at slow speed over sharp bumps, like a pavement transition from main road to parking lot. It comes from the front fairing area and sounds like some bracket or attachment is loose, but everything is tight. I think it may well be the fork springs hitting the tubes on sharp transitions. At speed with helmet on and wearing earplugs it is not noticeable.

I will have to check this as I did have the tank off. I also noticed that my spare plastic side stand disk was moved around in the tail section and was against my fender, I wraped it back up and have not heard the noise.
I checked brakes, head bearings all good.
Was thinking maybe EXUP as I have not cleaned it in a while?

What is wierd is like I said it comes and goes. I may not hear anything for 2 weeks then one day (after fill up) I hear it.
Chain is new this year only about 7000 miles on it. It is cleaned and greased weekly but that being said I did notice one link last time I had noise was sticking a bit when running in center stand, it was causing chain to hop when free wheeling in gear.

This might be over-simplified suggestion, but I had nearly the same described issue, and it turned out being a combination of gas tank isolators that where not doing their job.

In the end, after pushing them back onto the mounting points, and pushing forward on the tank while re-tightening the front bolt, it went away for good.

turned out to be my kick stand plastic disk rattling in the tail section. I carry a spare under the seat and it worked its way forward to were I have my speedo healer and was causing the problem.
Something so small was driving me crazy.

But what is worse is now my does not want to start problem is back.....grrrrr getting frustrating
