My [new] FZ600S!

If you missed it in the other thread, I just picked up a new bike from Lee/Oldschool and man is it a beauty!

It's a 1986 Yamaha FZ600S and it looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. Here are a few basic photos I snapped to submit to the insurance company for vintage/collector plates.

And here it is running:

All I had to do was unload it from the trailer, wash it, put the fairings back on and put in a new battery. That's it--it started up as if it was new.

It's just a testament to how well Lee takes care of his things. If you ever want to sell your FZ1, let me know! :)

As far as parts are concerned, I've just ordered a set of Pirelli Sport Demons (awesome tires for old bikes), a replacement regulator, spark plugs and some oil filters. I've emailed HEL about their brake line kit but they haven't written me back yet but other than that, the bike is ready once I get the charging system issues diagnosed

Those pictures look like they are right out of my '86 Cycle and Cycle World magazines, only without the drool :drools: marks... :cloud9:

I hope you are able to keep it in the same condition Lee did. I'd love to see a vintage race between the FZ600 and the RZ350 (my money would lean to the RZ). :party0011:

What a bike. :wow: Sounds like quite a trip to pick it up and bring her home. :deal: Enjoy her. :sport12:

Centerfold

Funny you should post up the magazine. I gave Dustin a copy of that exact magazine, plus the Cycle Canada from the date and two others that had comparisons of the FZ 600 and the others from that time.

Seems "his angel is a centerfold".

If the FZ600 is anything like my FZR400, It will eat a regulator a year. I have heard it is because it overheats. I have used thermal paste when installing to transfer heat to the frame quicker. I am now considering a small CPU fan perhaps. Looks like an awesome bike have fun.

The new one I ordered from Rick's Motorsport is supposed to be thermally improved to eliminate that. I can say that for my friend's '86 VFR750, the Rick's Motorsport unit has been running strong for over a year now and his bike has had the same issues as Yamahas of the era

Yea, Yamahas of that era did eat regulators. Remember I had to replace it on my '88 FZR1000 not long after I bought it. It also fried the battery.

One would think that with the advancements made in electronics and circuit boards since those bikes were manufactured a reliable product could be made...

I'll have to give it a try on my next melt down...:)

I couldn't help myself, had to ride it:

Only briefly. It's snowing now anyway

If all goes well, I should have her plated in a couple of weeks and all the maintenance done shortly after! In the mean time, I will try to get some help diagnosing the charging system. Of course, by 'get some help', I mean watch Bryan as he diagnoses the charging system.

Dustin, what a score from Lee you've made! She looks incredible and SOUNDS frick'n AWESOME! Congrats on a rare jem find and with thanks to Lee for taking such incredible care of a vintage Yamaha.

You're not kidding Eric! I doubt Dustin would ever find another "classic" in such nice condition and at such an attractive price ;)

I will send them an email and see what they say

RM Stator quoted me about $150-$200 to repair the entire charging system. Not bad.. I will see what this place quotes

This is what I got back from RaceTech:
Hi Dustin,
Thanks for the email. I'm sorry I don't currently make a stator or
regulator for your FZ600.
I would first make absolutely 100% sure your battery is good. Even
having the battery load tested at a repair shop can fail sometimes.
If there is any doubt at all, please replace the battery.

The stator test sounds good. A normal three phase stator like yours
should read in the 0.5-0.7 ohms per phase range.
The field coil inside of the rotor should definitely have resistance.
The manual reading of 2.7-3.3 sounds about right.
If you do not get a resistance measurement between the field coil wires,
that is most likely your problem. You need to get a need rotor, or
possibly have the field coil rewound.

Read through the 'Tech Support' section of our website. Click the link
on the top menu for Tech Support, and read through all of the sections.
Also download the troubleshooting flow chart from the link at the top of
the page. this should help alot in troubleshooting.

Good luck!

Evan
