Break in is crucial. Baby it too much and will always burn oil because the rings never seated. Once the crosshatch is worn away, nothing left to seat them...I typically keep cars for 200K and I've never had one that used any oil. Lucky I guess, although commuting might have helped make a difference.
I think I add a quart around 1500 miles to get me to the 3k mark.Mine uses way more than a pint between oil changes. More like a quart every thousand or so miles, and I don't consider that to be excessive.
I have a 2007 Silverado with the 4.8 v8 in it. does not leak or burn oil, 210k miles.
