After my experiment with the MD80 knock off camera (D001), I ordered one of it's cousins, the D011 flashlight style "vehicle" camera. It comes with a useless (on the motorcycle, perfect in car but who wants car video?) pedestal stand that I tried to use in the tank bag but only got video of the space behind the front of the tank.

Cruzman suggested velcroing it to the mirror so we tried it. Here's the raw video:

GA Hwy 60 to Wolf Pen Gap RD

I'm currently editing all the footage together but couldn't wait to get opinions on the location. The quality was changed for metacafe but it is the same as the other vids I've posted, with 30 fps.

Gonna try a similar thing with the MD91 (d005) cam that replaced the MD80 when I dropped it a few too many times.

The video delivery is smooth but there is a strange distortion, almost like a flaw in the lens glass. It gives a wavy (underwater like) effect in the center of the picture. That or I need to drink less.:confused0024:

For the use the format is fine, after all if we want REAL HD we have to go ride the road. Like you did, thanks for posting it.

That was a bug, I think. Earlier sections of the road don't look like that. We'll see when I get it all put together, correctly coded, and posted.

I noticed the same thing but I do like the placement. It gives you the feeling of flying just above the road with nothing in view of the lens but what is ahead. Be cool set to the right music! :D

I'm still editing so here's your chance, make a request!

Here's the d005/md91 knock off mounted against the rubber boot of the same mirror. It's not aimed very well, but I was more interested in vibrations. I did this one in 720p so hopefully the quality won't be so degraded.

Funny you say that about my lines Norm, I was fighting it all day. It felt like I was working rather than riding. I usually know when those times are coming and try to stay off the bike, but I'd been waiting a few weeks for this ride and didn't want to cancel it.

The video quality is a lot better. When still or moving slow, it is great but at speed, the watery/shimmer effect returns. I'm going to guess that this is the vibration in the mirror stalks causing it. Looks like a better location might be needed?

That last one is with a different camera. But I agree with you. It is better than when I tried other ways. The D011 is easier to place in different positions because of it's shape.

With the D011, I'm going to try attaching it to the front reflector then the front turn signals. I'd like to get a little of the bike in the video for some perspective. I don't think the d005 will work in those locations but I haven't tried it. I've got some more experimenting to do. I'm open to ideas.

It's a little cloudy today with Thunderstorms in the area so I may have to wait to try more locations.

A thought.... :D What about a simple metal bracket, something fairly rigid, that would mount by sandwiching itself under the horn? Then the metal could hang straight down and with a little muscle, bent to the correct angle to face forward. Now, using the 3M plastic connector material (like velcro but not?) attach the camera to the metal piece facing forward. Thus, the camera would end up dead center at the top of and in front of the radiator. Doable???

That's a good thought. I've been thinking about how to do that, now I know.

Just got back from Walgreens...first it is HOT! I had both cameras mounted, one on the turn signal and the other on the reflector. Somehow I had the lower one aimed too high.

The d005 is going to have a few waves in it no matter where I put it. On the turn signal, there were a few more than on the mirror.

Making videos is turning into more work than just sticking the camera on and going for a ride. I was never really happy with the handle bar mount I started with even though it was acceptable. Now a couple of cameras later, I like the mirror and turn signal location but want part of the bike in the shot.

The best view is mounted to the inside of the rear passenger peg so you can watch the rear tire move, unfortunately my cameras won't take that shot without a lot of vibration. the D011 takes it the best and I think I can find a stabilization program that'll give me what I want...stay tuned (I gotta find then learn how to use it before I can post today's rear facing results)

I think it is a little more stable than the D005s when mounted on the bike. However, Cruzman mounted his D001 on his tank using a suction cup and an extension to get it higher and his turned out all right.

That said, I'm pretty happy with the D005. And I'll use it even more now that I can stick it on a couple of different places on the bike and still be able to have the helmet cam option.

I've come to the conclusion that with these cameras, on bike options will have some vibrations. As long as I don't get sick watching the video, I can live with them.

I really like this view, when combined with a forward facing one, but there are a lot of vibes. this is with the D011.

So far, I've mounted them on the mirror and on the turn signal with decent, but not perfect, results. I'm looking for a spot that will give me a view of part of the bike but I'll keep what I got. Now, when's the next ride? ;)

I wish I could ride more. Haven't ridden much due to buying two cars recently, heat, FZ1 surging issues and busy weekends. Solved surging problem though so hopefully will go for the group ride this weekend. But after riding twisties on the group rides, commuting on the bike on interstates has got boring and I prefer to take the car nowadays. Been commuting on the bike for last 3 years, snow or storm or heat. It just has gotten too old for me now. Love riding the twisties exclusively these days.
