Problem restarting my 2006 FZ1

Usually I have no problem starting my bike, the problem is trying to restart it after I let it sit for say 15 minutes... it cranks over but doesn't want to start. If I shake the bike vigorously it can usually get it to restart. I've been asked to check to see if I can hear the fuel pump turn on when I push the start button... well, I'll be 82 this year and my hearing ain't too good!
At times I've been able to get it to restart by opening the gas cap (I guess they are know for having a vapor lock problem).
I hate to ride it anywhere unless I plan to just go for a ride and then back home. I had to use AAA towing the first time it happened.
When the bike is in my garage I keep the battery on a trickle charger.
Before this was a problem my bike had tilted over on my foot and I had to leave it that way for maybe a half hour or so while I tended to my foot, I've been wondering if that could have made the fuel pump get dislodged, is the pump inside of the tank?
Any ideas what's causing this problem?
 
On the gen 1 the fuel pump kicks on when the key is switched to on (not start). Is it the same way on the gen 2?

Congrats on still siding at 82! My dad still rode in his 80s. I am only 78 and hope to continue the family tradition.

On Gen 2 the fuel pump runs for a few seconds with the switch on and the kill switch turned to on. It isn't easy to hear when the line to the injectors is already full of gas after just being turned off. It is sounding like the vent hose is clogged given the symptom of it starting after opening the tank. The fuel pump is in the tank and is securely fastened so it's very unlikely to have been dislodged.
 
Took the bike out for a ride to our restaurant 25 miles from me... was in the restaurant about 5-10 minutes and when I came out it wouldn't start until I shook it violently side to side. Since that worked I didn't try opening the gas cap. I never leave home without a full tank of premium gas, and when I get home I refill it.
Where can I locate the vent hose?... I used to have the repair manual but it's disappeared.

6/15/26 Had to make another run to the restaurant today and as usual wouldn't start. Twisted the throttle a few times = no start, shook the bike side to side = no start, opened the fuel cap and blew a little air into it = started...
I hope to find a permanent solution as I'm sure I probable look a bit silly doing this :)
I will look at blowing some air through the gas cap rubber nipple today.

With the gas cap open there is a rubber "nipple" at the back. Blow some carb cleaner through and make sure its coming out the hose that connects at the bottom of the tank and comes out near the right hand side and in front of the back tire.

UPDATE
Well, haven't been riding much because I hate to get stranded but I've tried the suggestions made previously and today I took the bike for a drive (25 miles to my restaurant). After being inside about 15 minutes I went back out to the bike and with the bike in neutral I tried to start the bike... it wouldn't start, cranks fine but no start... tried all of the tricks, giving a twist of the throttle - nope, opening up the gas cap - nope, rocking the bike violently side to side - nope, nothing worked. Was thinking about calling AAA but then I tried one more thing, I put the side stand up and cranked it and it started. So now I'm back home :) Only time will tell if this continues to work when it won't start. If it does work I can look for a solution to that problem.

Me too. I'm 83 by-the-way, and ride my modified FZ1 '06 frequently.
Anyway a couple of comments: The clutch pull defeats the safety that prevents the starter from engaging if the bike is in gear. But his problem has the starter running but no ignition...so that couldn't be a solution. What I propose before looking into replacing a "tired" fuel pump would be two things:

1) My Yamaha XS1100 had a "tilt cut-off" that killed the ignition if the bike tipped over. I do not know if the FZ1 has this; if it does and the switch sensor is failing, AND if you always start your bike with the side-stand down...try this as an experiment; Put it on the center stand and then try starting it. If the problem goes away, then the switch is the problem.

2) Remove and contact spray every wiring connector that involves the bike running (I.E., not the lights).

These experiments cost nothing but a little time...

Yes, I know but that is also true of the kickstand switch so that really shouldn't have made a difference which is why I was curious of the conditions. Checking the lean angle switch (tip over switch) is a good suggestion. The lean angle switch can be tested in diagnostic mode code 8. Should read 1.4 or less if normal or 3.7 or more if in the overturned condition
