Please Help , Oil Craziness

ok this has been killing me so i have to ask somebody knowledgeable on the subject. I'm Currently riding an 07 fz1 . i currently have 2000 miles on my bike. The Dealership were i have the gold card plan for service etc for the next 4 years has informed me that the fz1 will not need an oil change until 4000 miles . My owners manual says 600 miles first change but they are insisting that Yamaha themselves has changed this. That it allows something " i dont remember what " to be seated better. and that putting a thicker oil or synthetic wil actually do more harm than good. so now i am in a situation where i'm looking at this BLACK oil in my bike and still have another 2000 miles to go before and oil change. Or void out my current service plan that covers everything but tires and clutch for 4 years... Please Help. this oil can not be good for my bike. Has anybody heard of this ?

Have them SHOW you within the documentation what they are referring to? If something changed for '09, that should only apply to current models and future and not be retroactive.

If you decide to change your oil, without using your service plan, does that void the warranty (I mean Service Plan)??

Warranty i am not sure of. service plan Yes. If i'm understanding everything correctly it will void the 4 year service plan that i have already paid for. as of now they are responsible for everything on the bike with the exception of brakes clutch and tires. By changing the oil i could be releasing them of that responsibility . But i'm pretty certain i'll still have a 1 year factory warranty. BroHay thanks for the quick response i will certainly ask when they reopen on tuesday for documentation.. i should have done that already , but guess i didn't want to act like i knew they're business better than them etc.

Kid they will not do one thing that they do not have to and if you do one little thing they will void the warranty. I personally never buy those extended warranties as they never pan out. We I normally do not.
I leased at Toyota Tundra. Replace the tires and oil changes and rotation for $600. Well at 33,000 miles they said my tires were good. Next oil change was past the 36,000 mile mark and they did not replace the tires because it was past the the mileage. So I paid 600 bucks for what 7 oil changes. $85 a change. I could do it for $20 at home.

Never again. Push the issue with them. Ask for written verification.

think i should go for the refund - 1rst services . the package did cost $1299.00 i'm not completely ignorant  i can do oil changes and such.

Man, I should look at the extended service on my Edge. So far, it has worked out for me and everything that I've asked for has been done @ N/C.

Have to go back now and read the fine print to see what is excluded. Of course, I can go to any Ford dealer in the US and have them preform the work. Do you have that same option?

If you do -- weigh the options of how much you ride during the year and where you'll be in 4 years time as far as the service and maintenance of the bike.

I know that they wouldn't do it if they didn't make money on it -- but then peace of mind has a price as well....

Good Luck!

well i did the math when i bought the bike. and yes with as much riding as i do.. i'll break them after 4 years with the current plan. the plan even covers the smallest of details. that wasn't the concern. it was just a matter of "is this real or not" . i've been riding for around 15 years and i've never heard of leaving the break in oil this long. it even says in the manual at first 600 miles. and then i have these guys saying 4k to allow things to seat properly. and that i'd be moving in the wrong direction to change this black looking mud out of my bike.I'm looking at calling yamaha on monday, and them on tuesday. If they have indeed lied to me. i'll be asking for a full refund of all service plans as well as not buying another bike from them. this is the 3rd bike i've bought there within 3 years.

Yamaha recommends changing the oil at the first 600 miles mark, mainly to get rid of any casting or machineing crud that may have been left in the motor after assembly. From then on out, it's at 4000 mile intervals, including the 4000 mile point. Get a users manual, or better yet get a service manual ( about $80-$100) and have the gospel in your hands. As far as service contracts go, there is only one reason they are sold, period. To make money. I know, I've worked for several companies who sold them and thay all make money. This isn't saying than no one has never saved a buck by having one, but like casinos, the advantage is on their side. If you do decide to keep their package, I'd be asking a lot of questions about the products they use such as oil and filter type. Just because they are a dealer, doesn't necessarily mean they use Yamaha or even approved parts. As far as a warranty and changing your oil goes, they cannot void your warranty. The warranty issue is usually covered by individual state law, and if you keep your receipts for the oi and filter you buy, you have evidence that you had the materail to do the job. Sounds to me like you have a real dandy of a dealer. I'd be on his case like stink on a skunk if he tried to pull that crap with me.

ya i'll be sitting in they're lobby Tuesday morning.. i wish they were open on monday. Did i mention the last bike i bought from them died after 2400 miles ? Granted they did treat me completely right on that one. everything was warrantied and paid for by them. so i know they treated me right on that. But i seriously like this bike. FZ's are truly in a class by them selves.

Well, it is good to know that somewhere else in the US, that local bike stores are closed on Monday as well. Makes it hard, especially when you have been riding over the weekend and you need something that is bike specific that you can't get at other places.

I always seem to have the most free time on Monday, and can never use it to go shopping/looking b/c of them being closed.

Post up your results.

I'm no mechanic but I find it hard to believe Yamaha is now saying that you should keep the break-in oil in there for 4000 miles. I agree with the others. I'd insist on seeing it in writing. If they won't do it perhaps see if there is someway of contacting Yamaha directly and lodging a complaint against the dealer. Did you but the bike new?

I bought an 07 leftover in Aug. 08. When I had 600 miles on it there was no question of needing an oil change at the dealer. I didn't have a service plan where the first serving would be covered so I paid for it.

Yes i bought the bike new.. no miles no gas and no oil in it. And yes i agree i always have the most free time on monday. Dont know if i'd want to make a complaint with yamaha considering i have more than a few friends working there.. but i'd definately ask for my money on the service plan . and notify yamaha just incase i run into warranty problems down the road.
