Hey All,
Just putting some info out there incase it helps anyone. I had a nasty misfire on cold starts with my 09 fz1 that almost drove me insane. (tldr; Seized thermowax)
If the bike was reading low temp when I started it, it would sputter to life for a few seconds then die. Unable to start again without some throttle input and then would not idle without some throttle. Sounded like only two cylinders were firing but I never confirmed. If I limped it down the road it would eventually snap to life and run great. Hot starts were never an issue.
This slowly got worse over time as I tried different things to fix it. Started with 4 new plugs. Then 4 new coils. Then new fuel line (old one wasn't even kinked). Then thought maybe it's electrical and replaced the rotor and stator to the upgraded sealed one which I wanted to do anyway for peace of mind. Then a new fuel pump and regulator. Then PC5 and autotune. Then new lithium battery. At this point I'd decided it must be something fuel related and the last piece should be the injectors. So I figure hey, might as well rebuild the entire fuel system at this point since I'd like to add some boost one day. Bought an AEM pump and regulator, 6an lines and connections, and was about to buy beefy injectors when I came across some video talking about cleaning the Thermowax as it can seize up over time. So I took the thermowax off, cleaned and lubed it up, lubed every moving part the thing touches really. (By the way, there is a tiny steel pin in there... Don't Drop IT).
That was it. After who knows how much time and money I spent messing with this thing I fixed it for free in like 20 minutes. Now I can actually adjust my idle and she starts right up no matter the temp.
