If no FZ1, what would you buy?

New bike, I don't know. But you be surprised how similar riding a GPz900r is, to a 1st-gen FZ1.
You mean the 1984 GPz? I test rode one of those in 1987 or so and didn't like it. Felt like a big pig. Ended up buying an RZ350, then a Honda CBR600F2, then a Honda Superhawk VTR1000 and finally the FZ1.
I think the FZ1 does everything better than that old GPz. It would be interesting to try again and see if I feel the same way now as I did then.

Thanks for interesting comments!

Yes 1984. They feel close to me. Both are a bit heavy (35 pounds difference BTW), carry it reasonably well but you won't mistake either for a GSXR750.

I just thought other posters might be interested in the information. The GPz900r was cutting-edge in it's day...but time and technology have moved on.

Oh yeah, I really lusted after that bike when it came out and I was a wee lad of 24. I really wanted to like it and was all set to buy it but was underwhelmed when I got to test ride it.

YZ250 great for clearing the head, and thumbs-up to Yamaha for keeping the insanity of 250 2-strokes alive. Let your grandkid take one ride, then you don't have to explain it to him/her.

BTW, when I was having trouble diagnosing a carb problem, I swapped in a known good 35mm from a KDX200, into the YZ250 (stock size 38mm). LOL, holy smokes even more midrange and instant throttle response. Sooner than instant; the front end came up in the same motion as the throttle twist. Closest thing to a CR500 I've ever ridden.

Area this topic belongs in hasn't been posted in like a decade, and what else we have to talk about? lol

So, if the G-Man came today and took your FZ1, along with every other one in the world, and gave you a check for a new bike, what would you buy? Lets keep it brand new, cause why not.
BSA Gold Star Single Cylinder 650cc. Not the original Gold Star!

Just when I thought I settled on the Tracer 9, I discovered the Triumph Tiger Sport 800!

It's roughly the same price as the Tracer 9 however it doesn't come with any side cases or a fancy display, and it's marginally less power with a slightly smaller engine, but it's a Triumph. Something different for me. It also looks more like a traditional motorcycle and not a futuristic robot, though the Tracer 9 is more subdued than the MT lineup. I suppose I'll have to take a test ride.

Pan America is nice, lots of relative deals on used models, but I'm aware of the teething problems with the early models.

I'll most likely end up keeping my FZ1 and my Harley indefinitely. I value reliability and low maintenance over anything else, seems I'll be sticking with Yamaha (maybe consider that Honda CB1000GT or Hornet after all.)

Triumph makes some nice bikes. The one Triumph dealer in central New England folded a decade ago. Being in LA you probably have several options.

Now having voiced that concern, I’m 5 miles from the Yamaha dealer and have never used them for anything other than chain lube in 25 years. I’m waiting for Bikevana where bikes just show up at your door.

There was a nice Yamaha dealer nearby that folded about 5 years ago. There's another one very close by but it's a mega conglomerate and it's horrific, everything is overpriced even the service and parts and they prey on monthly payment shoppers with HUGE markups on their new inventory.

Yamaha of Pasadena is amazing, old school feel with knowledgeable guys at the parts counter. I was desperate for rear brake pads on my old Silver FZ1 the night before a planned ride and they had them in stock!
