My motorcycle has developed a problem... sometimes it won't start. It cranks just fine so it's not my battery. My mechanic gave me a solution regarding "vapor lock" which has helped but there shouldn't be a vapor lock after the bike has been sitting in my garage on a trickle charger and I just added so gas. So yesterday that was the situation, and it wouldn't start. The solution was to violently rock the bike from side to side and I got it to start. When I got to where I was going I let the bike idle while I dropped off some paperwork and then drove back home.
My mechanic thinks it might be the fuel pump and has asked me to verify if I can hear the fuel pump come on when I turn he key on but at 82 my hearing isn't all that good and when my bike was last in his shop he had no problems with starting. The problem was present prior to it being in his shop... had a complete tune up done a flash the ECU, but the starting problem was not evident while in his shop.
Anyone has any suggestions as to what is causing this?

No this test is just checking the voltage at the connector to the fuel pump. If the voltage is there but the pump doesn't run then it has gone bad. Then the pump has to be removed and either rebuilt or replaced

I had the same issue happen after a ride to work one day. At lunch the bike wouldn't crank. I couldn't hear the fuel pump. Found out it was a bad connection under the fuses. Near the solenoid.
