I don't remember undoing the locknuts when I got into mine to clean and inspect the front sprocket. I think there is a screw or bolt that you can remove at a ball type joint, to remove the shift rod as an entire unit. I might be too late on this, seeings as the last post was yesterday, but...

Sounds like a no-brainer to me. You say you like the mods on the bike and would have done the same, and it has fresh rubber - and the mileage on the two bikes is similar. All other things equal, I would get the modded bike. EDIT: Oh, and one model year newer too? Yeah, not a hard decision...
