Nothing wrong with buying a jet kit but you can save yourself some money by getting the individual jets, shimming the needles (with Radio shack washers), adjusting the pilots and resetting the floats. And plus, no drilling required. You need to take the carbs out anyway to clean so why not do a...
I've lived in NM for 28 years and this is my 1st time to see the rock. I gotta say it's pretty cool. Wish there was some twisties in the vicinity. Next time, maybe Monument Valley. Traffic was light in northwestern New Mexico today so I was able to put down 465 miles in the saddle.
Saw a roll...
Might want to look at the Dunlop Sportmax Q2's. My bike came with the Sportmax Q1's and I love how they stick in the corners. Not sure how long they last mileage wise but I'm considering going to the Q2's when mine are done (for the very reason you specify).
Near as I can tell, they were a standard Yamaha accessory that cost about $450 new.
As a follow up... the reason I don't have the chin fairing installed yet is it took a little damage from the fall when the engine detonated. Nothing serious, just a little crack by one of the mounting brackets...
When I saw the bike posted on Craigslist I recognized that a PO had put some money into it (IE. Sargent seat, chin fairing, Pazzo levers, heated grips, sliders, integrated LED lights). I couldn't believe my eyes at how good of shape it was in minus the blown motor. It needed to be back on the...
PO told me the oil pump seized. I suspect there was more to it than that but I'll never know. In my experience, no matter the type of motor, there's usually warning signs way before something bad like that happens. He probably ignored them. The motor had only 27K on it when it went.
That's about what I paid for mine but yours has less mileage and doesn't have any road rash. I had to move some of my crankcase covers over from my old motor. The good news for me though is the new donor engine purrs like a kitten.
Good luck on the swap!
I really dig the tail light on mine. The LEDS are super bright and the way they cycle with the blinker function is awesome even in direct sun. I'm not sure who the manufacture is as they were on it when I bought the bike.
I haven't posted much here but have been lurking for a while. Bought a 2001 FZ with blown motor for $850 last Oct and have her rebuilt and ready to go. Here's what I bought:

I bought this motor for $675 delivered on E-bay:
