I've had my FZ1 with the Retro kit since May 2011 and I've thoroughly enjoyed it but over the last year or so I noticed I wasn't enjoying getting out on it as much as I did when I first got it. I think I was tiring of the fairly limp midrange that is endemic to the FZ1 engine, it doesn't come...
Don't overthink it. I usually go out for 125-150 mile ride, I start with a full tank and there is a fuel station 3 miles from my house so I always make that the last stop on my way home. I fill up, drive home, and then clean up the bike (bugs, lube chain, etc) and I put an ounce of Fuel Med in...
All the 2017 Yamahas are now on their website.....October 13th, 2016. The refresh on the FZ-09 looks good, it is on my list for next spring.

No surprise there. Most mods done on engines don't really make it run better overall, it might help in one area but often there is a tradeoff as some other aspect is affected to a negative extent. The manufacturers have to make sure their equipment runs as smoothly as possible while meeting...
I store my FZ1 sideways in front of my car and it can be a little bit tight so I'll rotate the mirrors out of the way which allows me to slide between the bike and the car. Never had any issues, and mirrors are still tight.
In the United States MCN is Motorcycle Consumer News, a publication that doesn't accept advertisements or endorsements and plays pretty much down the middle. But when I see MCN stuff from the UK it always seems slanted to come to some sort of predetermined conclusion. The Brit m/c press always...
Been driving for 50 years, riding bikes for 40 years .... my procedure: 1) get in/on, 2) start engine, 3) put in gear and go. I've never had an engine malfunction or any sort of engine failure in all those years. And I change the oil at manufacturers specs and don't try to second guess the...
Certainly not the best roadcraft on the van driver's part, but that scenario should ALWAYS be in the mind in entering a situation like that. Many (most?) drivers will cut short a turn like that if no one is occupying that space, especially if it is a tight turn.
When I had an FZ6 with an underseat exhaust I would stash a half dozen canisters under the seat, I often wondered if there was a chance they could overheat and explode. I guess they can. Hope the damage isn't too great.
Thanks for the video. I always take off the oil filler cap before draining just to help vent the engine when the drain plug is removed, makes the flow a little bit smoother and minimizes splashing as the oil comes out. And there is more oil that will drain out if the bike is taken off the...
OK, thanks. I didn't realize it was mainly designed and sold for diesel engines, I just never remember it saying that on the label before. As long as it is JASO MA certified we are good to go.
I've been using Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic in my FZ1 for five years with no issues. It's time for a spring oil change so I dropped by the local Walmart and picked up the familiar blue gallon jug of T6 for the usual price of $21.36/gallon. Upon inspection in my garage I see the designation...
Most chain lubes are lousy.....petroleum products that make a mess of your rear wheel and front sprocket. A few years ago everyone was using the Dupont Teflon spray to good effect, until they changed the formula for unknown reasons and it was no longer useful for m/c chains. Last year I...
