After reading the responses for "this guy doesn't like bikers", I'am now wondering why most of us have purchased 1000cc+ machinery. I will be the first to post that my reply of I don't pass on the double yellow or I'am hesitant to pass in a passing zone was BS. If you are going to tell me that you own a modern 1000 cc motor bike to be a law abiding citizen you are not only lying to me but yourself as well. In the current state of motorcycling you can buy a bike that does everything the FZ1 does with much less power, additional power that you can't use with out breaking the law and public sentiment. Some may chastise me for posting my feeling on this but I own a high HP bike to make my passes in the quickest and safest manner I can.

Thank you.

I got my Fz1 for the comfort.
Traded it because I goto the dragstrip and wanted more power.
I ride the 14 on the streets and to the speed limit in town but on the highway not so much lol.

As I said before, I pass any chance I get. The awesome power of these bikes is exhilarating so I agree with you Johnny, its virtually impossible to not speed on these things. But I wouldn't feel too guilty. People speed in their cars all the time. 18 wheelers have come behind me in my car when I was already doing 80. A speeding semi is the road equivalent of a weapon of mass destruction.

As you alluded to, the thing I like best about our bikes is the outrageous acceleration. I use it to close gaps and pass quickly rather than sustained high speed. No, none of us NEED 1000cc. It's just that once you've experienced it you find it hard to accept anything less.

Norm I'am with you. Its just so many people posted about the first rider passing on a double yellow that what I initially thought to be generally accepted sarcasm to be (with the acceptation of 1 or 2) to be BS. Come on if your plan is to abide the law Why are you on a 1000 cc piece of machinery that does 100 mph in second gear. All the fluff of being socially responsible and law abiding put most of the people who posted in the realm of; all they would need is a scooter; since they don't do the things the FZ or any modern 1000cc motorcycle does.

"I Feel the Need for Speed"......But actually, my FZ does not give me the ultimate rush, just quicker.
My 26 year old VMX1200 at 150mph is a whole new ballgame.
U never have enough power, I would have gotten a B-King if it didn't look so darn ugly:th_smiley_rotfl2[1]

I never pass on double yellow. Ever. Nor have ever ever felt I need to. I can use every bit of power in the FZ1 on a dashed yellow. That power does not only magically appear on a double solid yellow. Plain and simply they are double yellow for a reason. Either a blind turn or an up coming hill. And I can tell you, waiting 1/4 or 1/2 of a mile for a passing zone will not ruin my ride. I don't care if anyone else passes on a double yellow does (as long as I am not coming the other way) but I will not.

That being said I don't need all the power of the FZ1. What I do get out of it is the lower end power more convenient for a daily commute than I could out of a 600. I would have to drive around all day at a screaming 10,000+ RPMs to get what I get at 6,000 on the FZ1. I might be better suited to a V-Twin but I do want the option to have children some day.

I think everyone deserves to have whatever bike they want regardless of what they intend to do with it. Whether they want it for handling, performance, comfort or looks. I like the FZ1 for all those characteristics. Do you really have to be a hooligan to enjoy riding a nice fast bike? Do I not deserve an d FZ1 if I do not ride it on the streets to it's full potential?

I remember once when I was in Mexico rock climbing. I met this fellow, Dane Bass. We were on some really hard very unprotectable route. I started getting a little freaked out on a pitch that I was leading and conveyed my thoughts to Dane as to what I thought the chances of me living and breathing through the pitch and he simple said to me in a very thick Texas draw. Johnny... You didinint get int climbing because you thought it was safe did ya brother. Well thats a 1000cc motorcycle sumed up.

I also remember those left hand on the fork tube full tucks...only way to get your head behind the speedo.
My 1st FAST bike was a '78 GS 1000 with a ATP Turbo kit......got it right after PeeWee Gleason took it to the 9's in a Cycle World test.
90 hp stock to about 130 with 6lbs of boost.....the world sure looked different after 7Krpm.

Thats when I knew I liked going FAST.

I too love the acceleration. It is amazing. My fat ass can't experience it so easily on a 600 or smaller. :) I just am careful, as I am sure most of us are, about where I experience it. I have a few silly personal rules that to now have served me very well. ;)

Hail I think my point is most people and dare may apply to yourself have passed on a double yellow, now I am not saying that you do this every chance you get but I know you have been behind that person who is doing 35 in a 45 and said I'm outta here. Realisticaly the 1000cc necessity for a street bike went out appox. 1987. After that they power beyond a 600cc bike is all ego and has proven to those of us who have done some track time and gotten smoked by some old 600. If it will smoke you on the track its more than capable for the street.

You are obviously feeling guilty. I fail to see what that post has to do with 1000 CC bikes. You can do what they were doing on a 600.

I did not post in the thread you mention but they used very poor judgment riding as they did on that road. If I lived there (there were plenty of homes) , and had to deal with people riding like that every single day, with my family potentially being put at risk every time they came out of the driveway to go get groceries I might be a little bent out of shape. Not to the point that ass hat in the truck was but who knows his history or how many time his family or loved ones were put at risk from people driving like that.

I love to ride fast down some back roads but I am respectful, very respectful, from both a safety and noise standpoint when there are residential homes around. People like that give all the rest of us a bad wrap. Time and place for everything.

I pass on the double yellow. I'll do it whenever I think it's safer to be in front of a thing than behind it, like on a two lane road when I'm stuck behind a red pickup truck hauling a dirty 4 wheeler. When I took the MSF, the instructor said something about obeying the traffic laws when it's safe to do so. I can not see the safety in riding behind a loaded vehicle or one you can't see around/through so when the conditions warrant I pass.

I pass on the double yellow whether I'm riding my FZ1 or the VX800 (which I haven't ridden lately). It's just faster on the FZ. Oddly, I only pass on the dy on the bike, never in the car. There are places here where there should be or used to be a passing yellow but isn't.

I got 1000cc because the fz8 wasn't out when I bought the fz1. Now that I have 1000cc, I'll always have 1000cc. I may get another smaller bike, but the FZ1 will stay in the garage as long as it's rideable.

I understand those who won't no matter what they're riding, I just happen not to be one of them. I don't always pass to go faster either. Faster just happens.
