Call and set up a viewing. Then call the cops and see if they will me you there. If not, take it for a test ride and don't go back. What would they do call the cops.
 
Reply to the ad, ask to go look at it and test it. Have the police waiting around the corner. When you verify the VIN number, tell him you're calling the bank, blue light special!
 
Would they actually be so stupid as to post it on Craigslist?! I guess they think a rattle can job would be good enough?

Yep, I would be careful and alert the police to this to work with you on getting it back. As others have said you are only gonna get one shot at this and he is likely to be armed!

As others have said be very careful. I would just inform the police and not do it myself. This is a very dangerous situation and can end badly. I understand that you are very upset but after all it is just a bike not worse risking injury or even worse. I read on a photo forum (it is common to sell stolen cameras on craigslist) that this went bad more than once when someone tried to get it back. Unfortunately on the same forum was mentioned that the police usually does not take action. Maybe you can get in contact with the police were you reported it stolen and they would like to solve this once and for all.

But you want to move VERY fast. $2400, someone WILL buy that after recognizing that it is definitely not a 1st gen. Call the cops, tell them you found the bike, and you are going to look at it at X time. Take it for a spin, have someone video tape. Take the key, get the "paperwork" going while you wait for the police to show up.
