Fork service questions

Hello guys
So I've done almost everything to my ride other than change the fork oil.
What I am wanting to know is...
For a FZ1-n 2006-
1. What weight oil is best to use ? 5 or 7.5
2. How much oil in each leg? 500+ml ?
3. The air gap? 140mm I think I read somewhere
4.is there any fork servicing vids for this bike online as I've done other forks but never a set with comp and rebound on different legs.
Just need the correct procedures.
Thank you for any help you offer and do & don't etc you may know of.

Cheers

Delta.

Hahahaha!!! That's too funny as that is me and the "How To" on the forks a while back. Just remember that my video was for the first generation bike and is a conventional fork and not upside down.

Ha ha so that guy in the video you posted is you?
Cool..;)

Ha and the one I found too. That's mad.

So air gap?
Oil weight 5 or 7.5

Top man ;)
Your accent sounds English btw. Ha ha
I think I read fork compressed 140mm air gap
I'm not sure what weight to use though. I wonder if 5W would be to thin. I've also heard 10w makes a harsh ride
I was hoping someone out there had tried 5 and 10 then settled on 7.5W guys?

I'll tell you now that 10W is way too much. You'll regret it. I've tried it in the past and had to re-do the forks again. 7.5 is okay with the stock fork springs and if you want a little harder ride. Some guys will mix a 5W with a 7.5W and go with that.

Hmm so a 50/50 mix of 5W and 7.5W.
So are you saying 5W is too sloppy?
I'm also thinking of changing the springs to linear springs rather than what I'm lead to believe progressive stock springs..
So maybe race tech or ohlins etc linear springs and 5W oil.... how's that sound?
I ride fairly hard and fast and I've also got a R2 nitron fast road & track rear unit on the bike.
Any info that point me in the right direction will be gladly taken.
Thanks

If your going with the progressive springs then stay with the 5W oil. No need to move up to 7.5W I think you'll be fine.

I used the proper Yamaha oil 01 & happy, A litre nearly does it I used a touch of 5w to each fork. different brands of oil at the same weights seem to be quite different in feel for some unknown reason? its just about impossible to find out what the 01 oil weight is, everyone says something different rangeing from 0w to 7.5w

5w isn't just 5w, so you can't really compare two different brands.

I'm running Bel-Ray High Performance 5W, airgap 91 mm, with öhlins 9.0 linear springs. Before I had some Hyperpro progressive springs, but they were too harsh for me, and couldn't set a prober sag. It is now way more responsive, but just a bit on the soft side. But that might be because I'm used to the other setting. I might try a slight lesser airgap and some Silkolene Pro RSF 2.5wt. :nerd:

I found the forks to have too much high speed compression damping. So, I now have lighter than stock fork oil which helps tremendously on really rough roads.

Hello guys,
So I had chat today with K tech suspension specialist. They said the standard spring in the fz1 is a linear 8.2 or 8.3 I can't remember the point something exactly. Standard oil is 10 weight like most oem manufactures use.
For my weight the recommend a 9.5 spring and a piston kit and with the kit you use 5 weight oil. The can do the job including any seals etc for £400 inc vat and postage. The springs are £85 a pair the piston kit is £170 then you have any seals and oil and labour.
I might buy it all and do it myself yet. He did say the rods may need turning down though and if I have a lave. I don't.. I'm thinking of just letting them do it. It's a week turn around so not too long to wait.
Thoughts guys? K tech and Ohlins are similar in quality and I've seen good reports.
